Upper blepharoplasty in York
Upper eyelid surgery
As we age, the delicate skin around the upper eyelids becomes looser and the brow can drop. The eyelid doesn’t grow new skin, but the combination of skin laxity and brow descent can create:
A heavy overhang of skin
Eyelids that look “tired” or hooded
Difficulty applying eye make‑up
In more advanced cases, obstruction of vision
Upper blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) is a procedure designed to re‑contour the upper eyelid, remove excess skin and restore a more open, refreshed eye area.
At The York Skin Clinic, upper blepharoplasty is performed by Mr Philip Lim, an experienced consultant plastic surgeon.
Procedures from £2,595
Initial consultation: £170
What is an upper blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin (and sometimes a small amount of muscle or fat) from the upper eyelids to improve their shape and contour.
It is typically performed:
Under local anaesthetic (you are awake but the area is numbed)
As a day‑case procedure, meaning you go home the same day
By removing a carefully planned strip of skin from the upper eyelid and closing it with fine stitches, the surgeon can:
Reduce the heavy overhang of skin
Restore a more defined eyelid crease
Make the eye area look more open, rested and refreshed
In some cases, improve visual field where skin was obstructing sight
Blepharoplasty treats the symptoms of eyelid heaviness (the excess skin and tissue), rather than the deeper causes such as brow position or bone structure. In some patients, additional or alternative procedures may be recommended; this will be discussed at consultation.
Who is upper blepharoplasty suitable for?
Upper blepharoplasty may be suitable if you:
Have hooded or heavy upper eyelids due to excess skin
Struggle to apply eye make‑up because it disappears under the overhang
Feel your eyes always look tired or sad, even when you are well rested
Have skin that is beginning to obstruct your vision, particularly when looking up
Are in good general health and a non‑smoker (or willing to stop before/after surgery)
You will need a full consultation with Mr Lim, who will:
Examine your eyelids, brow position and surrounding anatomy
Take a full medical history and discuss any medications
Talk through realistic expectations, benefits and potential risks
Advise whether upper blepharoplasty alone is appropriate, or whether other options should be considered

Upper blepharoplasty – FAQs
-
At The York Skin Clinic, upper blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you are awake but the eyelid area is numbed. This reduces recovery time for many patients. In select cases, other options may be discussed.
-
The incision is placed in the natural crease of the upper eyelid, so once healed it usually blends very well with the surrounding skin. Like all scars, it will be a little pink at first and should fade over time.
-
Upper blepharoplasty does not stop the ageing process, but for many patients the improvement is long‑lasting, often many years. Future ageing changes may still occur but are typically from a much improved starting point.
-
If excess upper eyelid skin is obstructing your field of vision, surgery may help by removing the skin that overhangs the lashes. This can be assessed and documented at consultation.
-
Yes. Upper blepharoplasty can be performed on both men and women. The surgical plan is tailored to your individual anatomy and desired outcome.
-
Many patients on regular medication can still have surgery, but it depends on the medication and your overall health. Mr Lim will review your full medical history, including any blood thinners, and advise you accordingly.
-
Suitability is less about a specific age and more about your anatomy, symptoms and general health. Some people develop heavy lids earlier, others later. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
