Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive and uncontrollable sweating. Sweat is a dilute salt solution produced by the eccrine sweat glands, which are distributed throughout the body, with the highest concentration found on the palms and soles—approximately 700 glands per square centimeter. Primary hyperhidrosis is believed to result from overactivity of the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center in the brain, transmitted via the sympathetic nervous system to the eccrine sweat glands.

FAQs

  • Hyperhidrosis can be classified as localised or generalised.

Localised hyperhidrosis typically affects specific areas such as the armpits, palms, soles, face, or other regions.

Generalised hyperhidrosis involves excessive sweating in most or all areas of the body.

  • Hyperhidrosis can be embarrassing and disrupt daily activities. Axillary hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating in the underarm area, can lead to:

    - Damp and stained clothing that requires frequent changes throughout the day

    - Wet skin folds that are susceptible to chafing, irritant dermatitis, and infections

Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections.

Hyperhidrosis can be treated with botulinum toxin type A injections. These injections, approved for axillary hyperhidrosis, can significantly reduce or halt sweating for three to six months. Additionally, botulinum toxins are often used off-label for localised hyperhidrosis in other areas, such as the palms.

At The York Skin clinic we are able to offer private hyperhidrosis treatment for the excess sweating of the axilla (armpits)
